[Dec. 27th, 2009|10:15 pm] |
Well, not anymore.
I got home from work Wednesday evening and did not leave the house until around 2pm today. Well, I was outside the house Friday to clear the driveway, and again today to clear the driveway, but I did not leave the property. Urgo stayed in the garage from Wednesday night until Sunday afternoon.
Driveway managed to fill itself completely back in with snow over the holiday. Couldn't even tell where it was. Got it clear and there was sunshine today, so I was able to get back up the driveway this evening. Yay!
Spent the afternoon with Karita. We ate and shopped. Nothing terribly exciting. Though I did basically get stuck on her street when time came to leave. I have the driveway from hell, she has the street from hell.
I effectively lost my phone today. Panic ensued. It was eventually found out in the snow on Karita's driveway.
I've spent the past few days knitting and watching tv mostly. Rewatched all of Community again, and I started in on Firefly yesterday. Trying to find my vidding mojo. I got a terrible crack Community vid idea (B-52's Song for a Future Generation), but I think I'd like to do the Firefly vid bunny I've had for quite a while. A Nickel Creek song.
My first day shift rotation is tomorrow. Gotta be up at oh-dark-thirty and there's work waiting for me when I get there at 6am.

| driveway update |
[Dec. 10th, 2009|10:48 pm] |
Since you're all dying to know...
I did make it far enough up the driveway tonight. On essentially the first try.
Essentially because I managed to kill it and had to restart, but I didn't really roll back, so it still should count as being the first try. Hitting the drive faster than usual and in second gear seems to be the answer.
Vaguely related factoid... I have owned only one car with an automatic transmission. That was my first car ('79 Mustang), and it was totalled the day after I bought it.

| Winter - 2, Camille - 0 |
[Dec. 9th, 2009|11:27 am] |
Winter is kicking my ass so far. Could not get the driveway cleared enough to even bother trying to get the car up. And the car was not fun trying to get out of the spot it was in. It's still in the street, but hopefully it won't be in another big drift when I go to leave for work.
Yeah, it's blowing and drifting out there. I ran the snowthrower and did my two long swaths, and then got energetic and actually cleared the whole bottom third... then I looked up and saw that snow had all blown into the top part. Also, when I say I cleared the bottom third, that's not entirely true. My efforts to get up the driveway last night packed and froze up and I could not dislodge much of the mess.
Oh! I took pictures before I started. ( are you really clicking this? ) |

| snow sucks, redux |
[Dec. 8th, 2009|10:51 pm] |
It fucking snowed this evening. I have no idea how much.
Enough to make it impossible to get up my damn driveway.
Car is parked on the street. Hope it's not a "snow emergency", because I live on a snow emergency route and will get ticketed (or possibly towed, I suppose). Hell, hope nobody smashes into it. Streets are not in the best condition and people drive too fast through here.
And tomorrow will be the special fun of digging my car out from the inevitable snowplow mess. And clearing the driveway again to see if I can get up then.

[Dec. 8th, 2009|04:19 pm] |
Please to note the title of my journal-- "An Exercise in Self-Indulgence". How else can you explain sharing pictures of a driveway?
( cut for not-overly-large pics )
It started to rain about the time I was leaving for work (when the pics were taken). I've got my fingers crossed that all that nicely cleared driveway isn't a solid sheet of ice when I get home tonight.
Oh, and randomly... my most recent completed knitting project... ( Read more... ) :)

| Snowy Tuesday |
[Dec. 8th, 2009|12:09 pm] |
I have no idea what the official accumulation was, but I just cut a couple long swaths through snow that was six inches deep on my driveway.
With the snowthrower I bought last year and never used. :) I'm glad it works. And dingaling me still hadn't removed the pricetag thingy dangling off it (I bought the floor sample). I had to learn a bit about paying attention to where I was going when I managed to do a diagonal across one part of the drive. Oops.
The snow is very pretty, I will admit. But I am not looking forward to driving in it.
And there's snow/sleet mix in the forecast for this afternoon/evening, so it's possible all my driveway work will be for nothing.

| snow sucks |
[Dec. 7th, 2009|11:26 am] |
Who knew that depression would change my attitude about snow and winter in general? I sure didn't.
I just spent entirely too long outside clearing my too-fucking-long driveway and then my car...
I have a detached garage. It sits at the back of the property, so it's a little walk from the door. And spiders live there when the weather isn't bad, so normally I don't use the garage. But this time of year, it's in my best interest to deal with the walk and just park inside. Especially if I'm not paying attention to the weather. I swear the crap was thicker on the car than it was on the driveway.
And we didn't even get that much snow, but there was frozen crap underneath, so it was a pain to clear. And really, my driveway's not all that clear. I probably should have used more ice melt. I may regret that when I come home tonight.
All the snow can just stop. We don't need any snow this winter. Or any frozen precipitation, period.

| week from hell |
[Jul. 30th, 2009|04:56 am] |
And I swear it feels like it's never going to end.
And right here in the middle-ish, I woke up at 3am for no reason. Boom, I'm awake and can't get back to sleep. I eventually gave up and did some laundry and played a smidge with the wii.
But work hell. Xray generator on Monday. Only one covering Tuesday, and of course *two* xrays had to go down then. Yesterday, everything that needed to be done couldn't be done early, I had to wait. Today I'm the only one covering again. Tomorrow is the "easy" day, finally, when I do the monthly maintenance in Topeka.
My meds are in the process of being adjusted. And I took them early last night. I'd imagine both things combined to have me awake entirely too early.
I guess it's a good thing I just happened to pick up a couple sugar-free Rockstars yesterday.
OH. And I was supposed to have a furniture delivery Tuesday, but I had to cancel when the xrays went down. Rescheduled for Friday, so Topeka has to wait until my chifforobe arrives. *facepalms*
Still no vidding. I'm blaming depression.
Have I mentioned that my living room is almost all unpacked and put together? Well, the bookcases are merely loaded, not organized, and I still need a chair in there, and a tv stand. But! Relatively speaking, it's almost done. I even got rid of the huge pile of broken down moving boxes (Love craigslist). There's curtains even!
Okay. Going to try the sleep thing yet again. :P

| Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! |
[Jul. 19th, 2009|09:15 pm] |
With much help from my parents, I actually got stuff done today!
More boxes unpacked - the bookshelves are starting to look closer to right.
Curtain rods and curtains hung in the living room. So close to done in there. It's really shaping up.
Got a table cleared off. I have a habit of covering any available horizontal surface with crap.
Got the dishes done yesterday. Still need to unload the dishwasher.
No vidding accomplished, but I did rip my Leverage dvds.
Okay, listing it all out makes it feel like *less*. Weird.
edit - and now there's the possibility of a trip to Sioux City, IA, tomorrow. Good ol' SUX. Won't know until morning.

| how many things make a post? |
[Jul. 18th, 2009|02:22 am] |
So we're in for record low temps tonight. Why is it still warm in my house even with most of the windows open?
My house was built in 1885, according to county records. Given the lack of ornamentation, I'd guess it wasn't built by anyone particularly wealthy. Most likely didn't have electricity or indoor plumbing originally. Tons of windows, and yet no airflow. No fair. I can't even begin to imagine Kansas summers with just open windows. Ugh.
Omaha trip went fine. Was at the airport there for about an hour. Woo-hoo. Software patch and some monitoring. 360 miles round trip. Can I get a yee-haw?
Got a birthday party for a three-year-old tomorrow. From the sound of it, it's just family, so I don't have to deal with a whole slew of three-year-olds. Just the one (who's pretty keen, actually).
More Leverage vid bunnies hit today. And Jack/Daniel. I don't need more bunnies. Really.
Visited the shiny new Wally World supercenter that opened in town the other day. They did not have the two main things I was there for. No Leverage on dvd (was just released this week), and no rotisserie chicken. Bastards.
I should be asleep now. Why am I not asleep?
eta...because there was one more thing I wanted to include and I couldn't remember it!
I really need to break down and get either a landline or a cheap prepaid cell phone. For upstairs. Because I keep my regular cell downstairs (where it won't bother me while I'm trying to sleep. and so i won't forget it upstairs later), and what if there was a fire downstairs and I was trapped upstairs and couldn't even call 911?
Yes, these are the things I think about instead of sleeping.

Um. I may have just bought a tv that was too big to fit into my car.
And a refrigerator.
*facepalms*
Best Buy and their financing promotions are evil.
(in my defense, the tv is 7 years old and the fridge looks to be at least 20, probably closer to 30)(still... *facepalms*)

OMG you guys! My yard looks So Much Better today!
*stares out the window*
Thank you, sweptawaybayou for the lawn guy rec!
Now I need to make up plans for my little courtyard-like area by the backdoor (visible from the office).
Fannish content.. hm. No, I haven't seen the new Trek yet. Want to, yes. I'm thinking it's going to wait until I can go to a daytime showing on a weekday. Lemme tell you... it's made getting through the reading list that much quicker what with avoiding spoilers! ;)
Vidding... I had hoped to accomplish things in the vidding department this weekend. I had hoped to get serious work started/done on the Merlin vid... I started off by watching the last ep of the season (it was what was holding me back from properly getting started on the vid). And it annoyed me *so much* that I decided to scrap the vid completely. Really, does the world need a Merlin vid set to a Shakira song? Nope.
I did manage to rip some dvds for a crack vid idea I have. Dunno if I'll actually sit down and mess with it any today.
I think I may get out and go to Sunday brunch at Granite City. Though it just registered that it's Mother's Day. Um. Maybe not then. (though I did brave it on Easter Sunday. I got there early and it was okay. By the time I left, it was insane busy.)

| So that's the outdoors... huh. |
[May. 9th, 2009|01:57 pm] |
I'm very much an inside person. Outside is fine, in moderation. And within limits. I'm not much for actual wilderness, sorry.
Unfortunately, my yard resembles wilderness right now. Took a walk around with the new lawn guy a little while ago. Not gonna be cheap to get it in order, but I think it'll be worth it.
After he left, I started walking around doing random weeding. I've got these weeds that come up to my knees. Those just gotta go. They're particularly bad right by my door. So I put on my earbuds and played some peppy tunes on the ipod and got to yanking weeds.
edited to add---> While weeding! Came across a big ol' worm. *shudders* Then! Then!..... a snake! Small one nosing along the foundation of the house. Cool in the abstract, creepy in a 'uncontrolled wildlife' way. (end edit)
next edit---> Identified the snake, I think. I found a cool site for Kansas snakes. :) I apparently saw a milk snake. (And how specialized is the internet? milksnakes.com *facepalms*) (end next edit)
And then I realized there was someone there and they were trying to get my attention. One of my neighbors come by to say hi. Tammy. (Telling you her name gives me the chance to type it and therefore hopefully give me a better chance at remembering it) She's lived across the alley from here for 18 years. She and her husband are the ones with the crap in my yard. Her son is the one who had friends over, loud enough for me to call the cops.
Nice lady. I think the crap will be off my property soon. And I wasn't even bitchy about it. :) I didn't say anything about the kids. Because the noise thing hasn't happened again, so there's no sense making trouble.
Hm. That makes Tammy and Debbie I've met. Wonder where Annette is?

| COVERED IN BEES!!!! |
[Apr. 30th, 2009|01:03 pm] |
EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!
Let's just hope it works like I need it to. Got some pissed off bees right now.
Before yesterday, I hadn't actually heard the noise of the hive inside the house. During the swarming yesterday, I sorta did. That was NOTHING compared to the noise they're making now. Yes, I'm hiding. But according to Sonny (the exterminator), they'll be quieting down dead here in the next five to ten minutes.
...
Huh. Quiet now. Cool.
Of course, still have the fun part of tearing out either the floor (hardwood) or the ceiling and getting out the hive. Joy.
Fine. Later. (but still soonish)

| Wednesday, right? |
[Apr. 29th, 2009|01:21 pm] |
Easy to lose track of days.
So. Yeah. Bees. Decided to swarm today. Fucking creepy. There are bees flying around upstairs. I'm not going up there. No way.
After making dozens of phone calls, trying to find someone who would collect the bees and their hive, I finally had to cave today and call a damn exterminator. He's coming out tomorrow. Then I get to deal with the removal of the hive. Joy.
It just started pouring down rain. My sump pump's already been running non-stop for three days. I did open the basement door for a quick peek. Ugh. Depressing. But then again, I bought a 120 year old house. I knew there would be issues.
I want a nap now, but no way am I going upstairs. Nope.
Oh, there's lightning. Yay.
Bleah. |
